4Kadocho
Soy sauce brewing is said to have been born out of the process used to make Kinzanji miso, which originated in the Kamakura era. The town of Yuasa in Wakayama is well-known as the birthplace of shoyu, or soy sauce, and is rich in history, a town where the somehow nostalgic streetscape merges with the blue ocean and mountains that surround it. In 2006, Yuasa was designated by the Japanese government as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

10Wasiga peak cosmos park
At the top of 586-meter Mt. Washigamine bloom a profusion of over 1 million cosmos flowers. A scenic spot where on clear days you can see all the way to Awaji Island and Shikoku. ? Kaze no Yakata: Please check on the Aridagawa town website for scheduled open days.

11Aragi island
The symbol of Shimizu, selected as one of Japan’s Hundred Best Terraced Rice Fields. The 54 rice paddies built in the early Edo period are still cultivated by neighboring farming households. The beautiful landscape that changes with the four seasons is remarkable.

12Oishi Heights
870 meters above sea level, the Oishi Kogen plateau features panoramic views and flowering plants in every season. It is especially famous for the susuki silver grass that flowers in the fall. A world of silver spreads out before you. Many people visit from all areas of Kansai for hiking and other pursuits.

13Hall of the fire of the Inamura
Goryo Hamaguchi who became known for the Inamura no Hi (The Fire of Rice Sheaves) incident, was born in 1820 in the Hiromura village in Ki Province (today’s Hirogawa-cho). His achievement of saving many villagers during the Great Ansei earthquake & tsunami iby setting “fires of life” using rice sheaves to light the way continues to be talked about widely as a symbol of tsunami disaster prevention still relevant today. The Inamura no Hi no Yakata museum consisting of the Goryo Hamaguchi Archives and the Tsunami Educational Center was established in April 2007 in order to learn from and hand down the achievements and spirit of Goryo.

14Southern Plum Garden
This southern plum garden is well known throughout Japan as “Ichimoku Million, Fragrance Juri”–stretching along the Nanbu river and spreading across the gentle mountain slopes as far as the eye can see. Tourists come every year just to see the soft white petals paint the mountain, and listen to the beautiful songs of Japanese white-eye and bush warbler. The best time to view the plum flowers is around mid-February.

16Kishu Umekikan
During the tour of our umeboshi factory, you will also have the opportunity to experience making umeboshi. For your maximum entertainment, our facilities utilize a 3D video theater with stereoscopic images to show the charm of umeboshi. Inside, there is a shop that holds a wide selection of umeboshi, ume-related foods, and interior goods with ume motifs!

17Senri Beach (Senri Coast)
Connecting the Kumano Kodo and Kumano capital with a length of about 1.3km, Senri beach has been the only white sand and plue pine beach since ancient times. Near the coast, the Senri plum garden spreads out near the coast, creating beautiful contrasts between the white plum petals and the blue sea in the spring.

18Hirokawa beach
The Nishihiro Coast features wide and shallow sandy beaches so you will feel safe swimming even with young children. Shower, toilet and locker facilities are close by.

19Kashima Shrine
“Until the first year of Meiji, this shrine’s current grounds were considered a place of worship by the former main office located in Kashima’s southern bay. After the imperial visit of the ex-emperor (707) of the Kii province, in the 13 poem compositions of the Emperor Daijo (707), Emperor Monmu, and Empress Jito, it was later made clear that it would be enshrined as Kashima Daimyojin.”

“Kishu Binchotan’s history dates back from the Heian period, its rich history making Minabe town one of the top producers of Kishu Binchotan in Japan. (federation of sightseeing in nonprofit foundation Wakayama society)The Kiji branch of the Kumano Kodo as the main road of the Kii Peninsula that linked Kyoto/Osaka with Kumano is abundantly scenic and rich in history and cultural treasures. It is the road that the emperor took in ancient times when travelling to Kinan, and to walk here is to trace the path of the history of Wakayama Prefecture as well as visit the traces of the ancient Kumano faith. In the Arida district, crossing the Aridagawa River from the Kabusaka pass that enters Arida city from Kainan city direction, go over the Itoga pass to stroll through the old streetscape of Yuasa town, then in Hirogawa town, you can cross the Hirogawa River and go over the Shishigase pass following the path all the way to Hidaka-cho in Hidaka district.
