The Kiji branch of the Kumano Kodo as the main road of the Kii Peninsula that linked Kyoto/Osaka with Kumano is abundantly scenic and rich in history and cultural treasures.
It is the road that the emperor took in ancient times when travelling to Kinan, and to walk here is to trace the path of the history of Wakayama Prefecture as well as visit the traces of the ancient Kumano faith.
In the Arida district, crossing the Aridagawa River from the Kabusaka pass that enters Arida city from Kainan city direction, go over the Itoga pass to stroll through the old streetscape of Yuasa town, then in Hirogawa town, you can cross the Hirogawa River and go over the Shishigase pass following the path all the way to Hidaka-cho in Hidaka district.
